Serpentine Falls Muster
The latest Muster at Serpentine Falls Caravan Park was a great success, enjoyed by all those who attended. Read the report below…
Serpentine Falls
Everyone apart from Kaye & Shane arrived on Thursday and it wasn’t long before the Cornhole came out, followed closely by a refreshing ale or three. The competition was a little exacerbating as my new boards were a little too smooth and the bags skidded from the front, seemingly gathering momentum and flying off the back of the boards on just about every throw. The only sure way of staying on the boards was a direct throw into the hole. Even modifying the throwing action so that bags flew without spin only marginally gave any chance of bags staying on the board. My suspicion is that Vicki, who very kindly made the bags, used super slippery material, and that combined with a semi gloss paint, made it an interesting afternoon.
Those who went for a walk down the Falls Road would have run across the Alpaca’s you see in the left column. There was a farm with hundreds of Alpacas and lots of new “calves”?, some only a few hours old. The Alpaca’s are bred for their Wool.
Friday started off a nice day but deteriorated into showers and a thunderstorm in the afternoon. To say it “Persissted” down is an understatement. The ladies de-camped to a warmer place, while the men stayed under our awning, prepared at a moments notice to man the lifeboats. Bugger the Women & Children, they were nowhere to be seen!! Then the thunder & lightning came. At one point there was a lightning strike only a few hundred meters from the van followed by the loudest thunder crap you have ever heard. I swear the van shuddered, and yes I use the term “Crap” literally as when the thunder shook the van, I very nearly did!!!
Despite the excitement of the thunder storm, once it had passed, things dried up and it certainly didn’t put any dampener on Tapas. There was so much nice food, and so much to spare we could have fed the 50,000 + that attended the Freo/Eagles Derby.
Lorelle excelled with her yummy home made sausage rolls and mini quiches. There were a range of toasties, Pizza, fried chorizo, samosas and so much more…
Kaye and Shane arrived just as we were starting to eat, and then Kaye brought out her tasty Pumpkin soup plus various cakes & slices. The soup was a little spicy, but YUM !
As I said it was way more than we could manage on Friday night, so some found it’s way into our tummies on Saturday.
Tony was on hand with some remarkably “fine wine” which he plied on whomever was “lucky enough” to have an empty glass. He was also on hand with a bottle or three on Saturday evening.
Saturday saw a few take a walk to Serpentine Falls. Unfortunately the reports that dogs are allowed in Serpentine Falls is incorrect. Fortunately Shane walked the 2dogs back to the park, while the rest of the group completed the tour of the Falls.
Saturday Evening meal was a simple BBQ & Salads. The outdoor camp kitchen is not a huge area, but given that we were only ten, it was quite adequate, and the bonus is that the BBQ itself had plenty of heat. Nothing worse than a “stewed steak”. The salads were delicious ladies. I had a small serve of each one and loved them all. Unfortunately the football wasn’t as palatable as the food with the Eagles going down by a goal to Essendon.
Sunday Brekky rolls were delicious thank you to Lorelle & john for organising those, and also John for the very tasty Relish. I have written out Johns Relish recipe in the sidebar of the Newsletter.
Please, if you’d like to “Organise” a Muster let me know & I’ll run through what needs to be done. Don’t be at all panicked by the thought, because it can be as simple, or as fancy as you’d like to make it.
The Muster
For those who attended, I thought it was another great Muster. Thanks to Robyn for her editing and for her wine appraisal skills. ❤️🍷🍷🍷
The Food
Too good, too tasty and too much! Is there any other way?
The Organisers
Serpentine Falls Caravan Park was a fantastic location and many thanks to John & Lorelle for great organisation and for the choice of Venue.
Also a very big thank you to Lorelle and John for providing the Bacon & Egg rolls on Sunday morning. Very tasty, and a great home made relish John.
The weekend went very well and hopefully John & Lorelle will organise another Muster in near future.
John Potsey’s Relish Recipe
Makes 1 large jar – 1 litre
Ingredients:
• 1.5kg tomato
• 500g onions
• 375g white sugar
• 1 Tbsp curry powder
• 1 Tbsp mustard powder
• 1 heaped Tbsp salt
• 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
• enough white vinegar to cover
Method
- Cut tomatoes into small pieces and slice onions. Place in a large bowl together. Sprinkle with salt, stir, cover with cling wrap and leave to stand overnight in the fridge.
- Drain off the liquid and put the mix into a large pot. Drink the drained liquid – bit salty but I like it.
- Sprinkle with the sugar and almost cover with the vinegar and bring to the boil for 5 minutes. Add cayenne pepper.
- Mix mustard powder and curry powder with a little vinegar and add. Simmer uncovered. Make sure you stir occasionally it so it doesn't burn.
- When the mix is boiled down and reasonably thick its ready to bottle.
- Sterilise jar
- Bottle while hot – cover, but don’t seal the jar until the mix is cool, otherwise the lid can be very hard to remove later.
- Refrigerate.
